Beam is the width of a boat at its widest point. A wider beam generally means more stability and interior space, which is why cruising catamarans (with two hulls spread wide apart) feel so much steadier underfoot than a narrow racing monohull. When comparing boats for a charter, beam is a quick proxy for how much you'll roll around at anchor.
The bilge is the lowest part of a boat's interior hull, where water collects before being pumped out. Every boat takes on some water — through hatches, waves, or small leaks — and the bilge is designed to catch it before it reaches anything electrical. Checking the bilge for water is a standard part of the daily boat checks you'll do on any liveaboard course .
The boom is the horizontal spar that extends from the base of the mast and holds the foot of the mainsail taut. It swings from side to side during a tack or gybe, which is why "boom" is also the sound effect of every beginner's first (and hopefully only) unexpected encounter with it. "Watch the boom!" is the single most shouted phrase on any learn-to-sail boat, for good reason — a swinging boom moves with real force and is a leading cause of on-deck injuries.
The bow is the forward-most part of a boat. Everything at the front — anchor locker, forward hatch, headsail — is described as being "at the bow" or "forward." Bow and stern give you the boat's fixed front-to-back reference, just as port and starboard give you its fixed left-to-right reference.
A bulkhead is a vertical partition inside the hull that separates the boat into compartments and adds structural strength. Bulkheads help stop water from flooding the entire boat if one section is holed, and they're also where a lot of the rigging loads (like chainplates) are ultimately anchored.
A chainplate is a strong metal fitting bolted through the hull or deck that anchors a shroud or stay to the boat. It transfers the enormous tension of the standing rigging into the hull structure itself. A failed chainplate is a rare but genuinely serious problem, which is why they're a standard check item on any rig inspection.
A cleat is a fitting with two projecting horns around which a line is wrapped and secured. You'll cleat off everything from dock lines to halyards using a simple figure-eight wrapping pattern finished with a locking hitch. Learning to cleat a line properly — quickly, and so it won't slip or jam — is one of the first hands-on skills taught on any beginner sailing course.
The coachroof is the raised part of the cabin roof that gives standing headroom below deck. It's usually where you'll find deck hatches, dorade vents, and sometimes solar panels bolted down.
The cockpit is the recessed area, usually near the stern, where the crew sits or stands to steer and handle the sails. On most cruising monohulls and catamarans this is genuinely the social hub of the boat — where the helm, mainsheet, winches, and often the table for dinner all live within arm's reach of each other.
The companionway is the stepped opening and ladder that connects the cockpit to the cabin below. It's usually closed off with washboards or a sliding hatch to keep water out when things get wet on deck.
Draft — spelled "draught" in British and Australian English — is the vertical distance from the waterline to the lowest point of the keel or hull. A deep-draft monohull points higher upwind but can't get into shallow anchorages; a shallow-draft catamaran trades some upwind performance for the ability to tuck into skinny water most other boats can't reach. Always check a chart's depths against your boat's draft before you commit to an anchorage — running aground is an entirely avoidable way to end a good day.
A fender is an air- or foam-filled bumper hung over the side of a boat to cushion it against docks, pilings, or other boats. Rig fenders on the side you'll be tying up to before you arrive at the dock, not after — fumbling with fender lines while also trying to steer is a classic beginner scramble.
The forestay is the standing rigging wire running from the bow to the top (or partway up) the mast, and it usually carries the headsail. Together with the backstay and shrouds, it's one of the wires holding the mast up; on furling headsail systems, the forestay often has the roller-furling drum built around it.
Freeboard is the height of the hull above the waterline. More freeboard keeps waves and spray out of the cockpit and cabin, but it also catches more wind (windage) — one of many small trade-offs in yacht design.
A genoa is a large headsail whose foot extends aft past the mast, overlapping the mainsail. It's essentially an oversized jib, and swapping between a genoa and a smaller jib is one of the main ways cruisers adjust for changing wind strength. See also Jib.
The gooseneck is the fitting that attaches the boom to the mast and allows it to pivot. It takes a surprising amount of strain during gybes and reefing, so it's one of the fittings worth a visual check before you head offshore.
The gunwale — pronounced "gunnel" — is the upper edge of a boat's side, where the hull meets the deck. The unusual pronunciation trips up almost every beginner at least once (it's a fossil of the word's origin, when ships' gunwales supported the guns). "Rail" and "gunwale" are often used interchangeably by cruising sailors.
A halyard winch is a mechanical drum, usually mounted on the mast or cabin top, that multiplies the crew's pulling force to hoist a sail. See Winch for the general mechanism.
The head is the nautical term for a boat's toilet and, by extension, the small bathroom compartment that contains it. Marine heads work differently from home plumbing — most require manual pumping or have specific flushing procedures — so "how does the head work" is a genuinely common and entirely reasonable first-day question on a liveaboard course.

The head of a sail is its top corner, where the halyard attaches to hoist it. Every sail has three corners with their own names — head, tack, and clew — and knowing them makes rigging instructions ("shackle the halyard to the head") make instant sense instead of sounding like a foreign language.
The helm is the wheel or tiller used to steer a boat, and by extension the term for whoever is steering it. "Take the helm" simply means take over steering; on a Sailing Virgins course, everyone gets real time at the helm, not just a photo op behind the wheel.
The hull is the main body of a boat — everything below the deck that displaces water and keeps you afloat. Monohulls have one hull; catamarans have two; trimarans have three. See Monohull and Catamaran in Chartering & Crew Life for how this shapes the whole sailing experience.
The keel is the fixed fin beneath the hull that provides stability, resists sideways sliding, and (on most sailboats) houses ballast weight. Without a keel, the sideways push of the wind on the sails would simply shove the boat sideways instead of forward — the keel is what converts that push into forward drive. Different keel designs (fin, full, wing, bulb) trade off performance, draft, and stability in different ways.
Lifelines are the wire or rope railings, supported by stanchions, that run around the outer edge of the deck to help stop crew falling overboard. They're a last line of defence, not a substitute for good balance and three points of contact — treat them as a backstop, not a handrail to lean on casually.
The mast is the vertical spar that holds up the sails and rigging. Most cruising yachts have a single mast, but ketches, yawls, and schooners carry two — see Rig Types below.
The pulpit is the raised guardrail at the very bow (or stern, where it's called the pushpit) of a boat. It gives the crew something secure to hold onto while handling the anchor or headsail right at the sharp end of the boat, which is exactly where the deck moves around the most.
The pushpit is the raised guardrail at the stern, mirroring the pulpit at the bow. It's a favourite spot for mounting stern lights, life ring brackets, and (increasingly) solar panels and davits for the dinghy.
The rudder is the underwater blade at the stern that steers the boat by deflecting water flow. It's turned by the wheel or tiller through a system of cables, rods, or hydraulics, and it only works if the boat is moving through the water — a stationary boat with no way on won't answer its helm, a fact that surprises almost every beginner the first time they try to dock too slowly.
A sail locker is a dedicated storage compartment, usually in the bow, where spare sails are stowed. On a week-long charter you'll rarely go digging in here, but it's good to know where the spare jib lives if the forecast turns.
The saloon is the main living and dining area below deck. It's where the crew gathers for meals, theory sessions, and — on a Sailing Virgins course — the evening debrief of the day's highs and lows over dinner.
A shroud is a wire or rod that runs from the mast to the sides of the deck to support it laterally. Shrouds, forestay, and backstay together make up the standing rigging — the fixed structure that keeps the mast upright, as opposed to the running rigging (halyards, sheets) that you actively adjust. A spar is any pole used to support sails or rigging, including the mast, boom, and spinnaker pole. It's a catch-all term you'll hear used by more experienced sailors instead of naming each part individually.
Spreaders are horizontal struts partway up the mast that hold the shrouds out at an angle, improving their ability to support the mast sideways. Sail trim tip for later in your sailing life: telltales taped near the spreaders help you read airflow high up the sail, not just down low.
Stanchions are the vertical metal posts around the deck's edge that support the lifelines. A wobbly stanchion is a genuine safety issue on an older boat — part of any thorough pre-departure check is giving them a firm shake to make sure they're solidly through-bolted.
The stern is the rear-most part of a boat. "Aft" means towards the stern, the opposite of "forward," which means towards the bow.
A tiller is a steering arm attached directly to the rudder head, used to turn the boat by hand. Small dinghies and some smaller cruising boats use a tiller instead of a wheel — and confusingly, you push a tiller the opposite way to the direction you want the bow to go, which catches out almost every sailor who learned on a wheel first.
A toe rail is a low raised strip running along the edge of the deck, just high enough to catch a heel and stop gear (or feet) sliding overboard. It doubles as an attachment point for shackles and blocks used in sail trim.
The transom is the flat (or sometimes curved) structure across the stern of the hull. On modern cruising boats it's often a drop-down "swim platform" transom — brilliant for getting in and out of the water at anchor, which is exactly how most Sailing Virgins mornings begin.
A winch is a geared mechanical drum used to multiply the crew's pulling force when hauling in a sheet or halyard. You wrap the line clockwise around the drum and crank a removable handle; winches are what let one person on a 45-foot yacht do a job that would otherwise take four. Never leave your fingers near a loaded winch drum — it's one of the few genuinely non-negotiable safety rules taught in week one.
The backstay is the standing rigging wire running from the top of the mast to the stern, balancing the forward pull of the forestay. Some backstays are adjustable under load, letting experienced crews bend the mast slightly to flatten the mainsail in stronger wind.
A batten is a rigid strip inserted into a pocket in the sail's leech to help it hold its shape. Fully battened mainsails (common on modern cruising catamarans) run battens the entire width of the sail for a flatter, more controlled shape and quieter flogging when tacking.
A boom vang — called a "kicking strap" in British and Australian usage — is a line or hydraulic ram that pulls the boom down to control mainsail twist. Without it, the top of the mainsail can twist open and spill wind exactly when you want power the most, particularly when sailing downwind.
The clew is the aft lower corner of a sail, where the sheet attaches. Along with the head and tack, it's one of the three corners every sailor learns to name in the first hour of any beginner course.
The foot is the bottom edge of a sail, running from the tack to the clew. On the mainsail, the foot usually runs along the boom; on a loose-footed mainsail, the foot isn't attached to the boom at all, which allows a fuller, more powerful shape.
A genoa track is the sliding rail on deck that lets the crew adjust the position of the genoa's sheeting point (the car) fore and aft. Getting this position right is one of the finer points of sail trim — move it forward to tighten the leech in light air, aft to open it up in a breeze.
A halyard is a line used to hoist a sail up the mast. Every sail has its own halyard — main halyard, jib halyard, spinnaker halyard — named for the sail it raises. Pronounced "HAL-yerd."
A jib is a triangular headsail set forward of the mast, smaller than a genoa and typically not overlapping the mast. It's the standard "second sail" on most sloop-rigged boats and the first headsail most beginners learn to trim on a Start Sailing course .

The leech is the trailing (back) edge of a sail, running from the head to the clew. A leech that flutters excessively — audibly — usually means the sail needs tightening or a batten needs attention; sailors call this "leech flutter," and yes, it is as annoying to listen to for six hours as it sounds.
A leech line is a thin cord sewn into the leech of a sail that can be tightened to reduce flutter. It's a small, easily overlooked adjustment that makes a noticeably quieter, more efficient sail.
The luff is the forward (leading) edge of a sail, the part that meets the wind first. "Luffing" also describes what happens when that edge starts to flap because the sail isn't sheeted in enough or the boat has turned too close to the wind — see Luffing in Points of Sail & Manoeuvres.
The mainsail is the primary sail set on the aft side of the mast, attached to the boom along its foot. It's usually the largest single sail on a sloop-rigged boat and the one you'll spend the most time trimming.
The mainsheet is the line used to control the angle of the mainsail relative to the wind. It runs through a system of blocks, usually ending near the helm so the person steering can also feel and adjust mainsail power in real time — a satisfying multitasking skill that clicks for most people by day three of a course.
The mast step is the fitting, either on deck or down at the keel, where the base of the mast sits and is secured. A "deck-stepped" mast sits on top of the coachroof; a "keel-stepped" mast passes through the deck to sit on the keel itself, generally a stronger arrangement for offshore work.
The outhaul is the line that tensions the foot of the mainsail by pulling the clew towards the end of the boom. Pull it tight in strong wind to flatten the sail and reduce power; ease it in light air for a fuller, more powerful shape (Running Rigging Essentials).
Reef points are the reinforced eyelets set in horizontal rows on a mainsail, used to tie down a reduced sail area when reefing. Modern boats mostly use "slab reefing" or in-mast/in-boom furling instead of tying individual points, but the term persists across all systems. See Reefing.
Rig type describes the arrangement of masts and sails on a sailboat — sloop, cutter, ketch, yawl, and schooner are the most common. A sloop (one mast, mainsail plus one headsail) is by far the most common modern cruising rig and what you'll sail on almost every Sailing Virgins course; ketches and yawls carry a second, shorter mizzen mast aft of the main.
Roach is the extra sail area added beyond a straight line from head to clew along the leech, supported by battens. More roach means more sail area and power for the same mast height — one reason modern mainsails look noticeably curvier along the back edge than sails from decades past.
Roller furling is a system that rolls a sail around a rotating foil or stay for fast reefing or stowing without leaving the cockpit. Nearly every modern charter yacht has a roller-furling headsail, and many now have in-mast or in-boom furling mainsails too — a genuine game-changer for shorthanded and beginner-friendly sailing.
Running rigging is the collective term for all the lines used to control and adjust the sails — halyards, sheets, outhauls, and reefing lines. Unlike standing rigging, running rigging is meant to move, and you'll be handling it constantly through a normal day's sailing.
A sheet is a line used to control the angle of a sail to the wind by pulling it in or letting it out. "Sheet in" means pull the sail closer to the centreline; "ease the sheet" means let it out. Confusingly for beginners, a sheet is a rope, not a sail — the sail itself is never called a sheet.

A spinnaker is a large, lightweight, often colourful sail flown in front of the boat for extra power when sailing downwind. It's a spectacular sight filled with wind but genuinely tricky to handle for beginners — hoisting, gybing, and dousing a spinnaker cleanly takes real technique, which is why it's usually saved for intermediate and advanced courses.
A spinnaker pole is a rigid spar used to hold the spinnaker's windward corner out away from the boat, away from the mainsail's wind shadow. It's rigged with its own set of control lines (topping lift, foreguy) that add a genuinely new layer of complexity to downwind sailing.
Standing rigging is the fixed wires and rods — shrouds, forestay, backstay — that permanently support the mast. Unlike running rigging, you don't adjust standing rigging while sailing (beyond occasional backstay tension); it's inspected, not trimmed.
The tack is the forward lower corner of a sail, where the luff meets the foot. This is one of two very different meanings of "tack" in sailing — see Tacking for the manoeuvre.
Telltales are short lengths of wool or ribbon attached to a sail to show the airflow across its surface. Watching them stream smoothly on both sides of the sail (rather than fluttering or stalling) is the fastest way to learn proper sail trim by eye — a skill every beginner starts practising in their first week on the water.
A topping lift is a line that supports the boom (or spinnaker pole) when the sail isn't hoisted or under load. Without one, a lowered boom would simply drop into the cockpit — not ideal mid-conversation.
A traveller is a track and car system, usually mounted across the cockpit, that lets the mainsheet's attachment point move side to side. Adjusting the traveller changes mainsail angle without changing sail shape the way easing the sheet does — a subtler trim tool most sailors don't discover until their second or third course.
A beam reach is a point of sail where the wind comes from directly abeam (90° to the boat's heading). It's often the fastest, most comfortable point of sail — good boat speed, moderate heel, and none of the concentration that close-hauled sailing demands.
Bearing away means turning the boat's bow away from the wind direction, onto a broader point of sail. It's the opposite of heading up, and it's usually accompanied by easing the sheets to match the new angle.
A broach is an uncontrolled, often sudden turn into the wind, usually caused by too much sail for the conditions, that can heel a boat dangerously and risk a capsize. It typically happens downwind in a strong gust when the helm loses steering control — a good reminder that reefing early beats reefing in a panic.
Close-hauled is the point of sail closest to the wind a boat can sail while still maintaining forward drive, typically around 45° off the true wind. Sailboats cannot sail directly into the wind, so close-hauled represents the practical limit — any tighter and the sails simply luff and stop generating power. Also called "beating" or "on the wind."
A close reach is a point of sail between close-hauled and a beam reach, with the wind forward of abeam. It's a comfortable, powerful angle and a great one for beginners to build confidence in sail trim before tackling closer, more demanding angles.
Downwind describes sailing with the wind generally behind the boat, covering the broad reach and run points of sail. Downwind sailing feels deceptively gentle — less apparent wind, less heel — which is exactly why it can catch sailors out when it's time to gybe in a breeze.
A gybe — spelled "jibe" in American English — is a manoeuvre in which the stern of the boat passes through the wind, causing the boom and sails to swing rapidly from one side to the other. It's the downwind equivalent of a tack, but because the sail is under power (not luffing) through the turn, an uncontrolled gybe swings the boom hard and fast — always announce "gybe-ho!" and control the mainsheet through the turn. This is one of the two manoeuvres, alongside tacking, you'll drill until it's second nature on our courses .
Read the full Jibing guide →Heading up means turning the boat's bow towards the wind direction, onto a closer point of sail. It's the opposite of bearing away, and — taken too far without easing the sails — it's how you accidentally end up head to wind with everything flapping.
Head to wind means the bow is pointed directly into the wind, the one position from which a sailboat generates no drive at all. It's a deliberately "parked" position used to hoist or lower the mainsail, since the sail can flap freely without loading up.
A boat is "in irons" when it has stalled head to wind with no forward motion, unable to fill its sails on either tack. It's a common and entirely fixable beginner mistake — usually solved by backing the jib to push the bow off to one side and regain steerage.
Luffing describes a sail flapping because it isn't sheeted in tightly enough for the current angle to the wind, or because the boat has turned too close to the wind. A gently luffing sail on the edge of close-hauled is a useful visual cue for finding the fastest angle upwind; a fully luffing sail everywhere else usually means something needs trimming.
Pinching means sailing too close to the wind, causing the sails to lose power and the boat to slow down. It's a very common beginner instinct — pointing higher feels like "more progress upwind," but a pinched boat often makes worse progress than one sailed a few degrees freer and faster.
Points of sail describe the full range of angles at which a sailboat can travel relative to the true wind direction, from close-hauled through to running. In order from closest to the wind to furthest: close-hauled, close reach, beam reach, broad reach, and run. Learning to read and name these angles — by feel as much as by compass — is one of the very first skills taught on any beginner sailing course.

Reefing means reducing the area of a sail exposed to the wind, usually by partially lowering and securing it, to keep the boat manageable in strong wind. The sailor's rule of thumb is "reef early" — if you're even wondering whether you should reef, you probably should have already. Every intermediate-level course teaches slab and furling reefing as a core, non-negotiable seamanship skill.
Read the full Reefing guide →Running is the point of sail with the wind coming from directly (or nearly directly) behind the boat. It can feel deceptively calm since the apparent wind drops, but it's also the point of sail with the highest risk of an accidental gybe if attention (or the helm) wanders.
Tacking is a manoeuvre in which the bow of the boat turns through the wind, causing the sails to switch from one side to the other, typically used to sail upwind in a zig-zag pattern. Because a boat can't sail directly into the wind, tacking lets you make progress towards a destination that's upwind by alternating close-hauled angles on each side. "Ready about!" followed by "Helm's a-lee!" is the traditional call-and-response as the manoeuvre begins.
Read the full Tacking guide →Weather helm is the tendency of a sailboat to turn (round up) towards the wind unless the helm actively corrects for it. A small amount is normal and even desirable — it gives natural feedback and a safety margin if the helm lets go — but excessive weather helm, often from being overpowered or under-reefed, is tiring and a sign it's time to reduce sail.
Apparent wind is the wind actually felt on a moving boat — the combination of the true wind and the headwind created by the boat's own motion. It's why sailing fast downwind can feel almost still (the boat's speed partly cancels the true wind) while sailing upwind always feels breezier than the forecast suggested. Understanding apparent wind is fundamental to sail trim at any speed.
Backing describes a wind shift that moves counter-clockwise (for example, from north to west). It's the opposite of veering, and in the northern hemisphere a backing wind ahead of an approaching low-pressure system is often a classic sign of deteriorating weather.
The Beaufort scale is a 13-level (0–12) scale describing wind strength from calm to hurricane force, based on observed sea and land conditions rather than instruments alone. A Force 4 "moderate breeze" (11–16 knots) is comfortable, cruising-friendly sailing; by Force 6 "strong breeze" (22–27 knots) most cruising crews are reefed down and paying close attention (Met Office Beaufort scale). Sailors quote wind in knots more often than Beaufort numbers today, but the scale's descriptive language ("white horses," "spindrift") has thoroughly seeped into everyday sailing talk.
A cold front is the leading edge of a colder air mass advancing into warmer air, typically bringing a sharp wind shift, a squally line of showers, and a temperature drop. Fronts are exactly the kind of feature covered in Reading Wind and Wave Patterns — recognising an approaching front from the sky alone, without a forecast, is a genuinely useful offshore skill.
Fetch is the distance of open water over which wind blows uninterrupted, which directly determines how large the resulting waves can grow. A long fetch across open ocean builds much bigger seas than the same wind strength blowing across a small, land-locked bay — one reason protected cruising grounds like the BVI feel so much calmer than open Atlantic crossings in similar wind.
A following sea describes waves moving in the same direction as the boat, pushing from astern. It can make for a fast, surfing kind of sailing, but it also demands careful helming to avoid broaching, since the stern can be pushed off-line by an overtaking wave.
A weather front is the boundary between two air masses of different temperature or density, typically bringing a change in wind, cloud, and precipitation as it passes. Cold fronts, warm fronts, and occluded fronts each have distinct, learnable signatures on both a weather chart and the sky itself.
A gust is a brief, sudden increase in wind speed above the average. Gusts are why sail trim is never "set and forget" — a good crew is constantly easing and re-trimming to absorb gusts smoothly rather than reacting to them late.
An isobar is a line on a weather chart connecting points of equal atmospheric pressure. Tightly packed isobars indicate a strong pressure gradient and therefore stronger wind — reading isobar spacing at a glance is one of the fastest ways to size up a forecast before you've read a single word of text.
A katabatic wind is a wind caused by cold, dense air draining downhill under gravity, common near mountainous coastlines and fjords. They can arrive suddenly and with real force even under an otherwise calm forecast — a notable local hazard in dramatic sailing grounds like Patagonia.
A knot is a unit of speed equal to one nautical mile per hour. Wind, boat speed, and current are all measured in knots at sea, which keeps everything on the same, chart-friendly unit rather than switching between mph and km/h.
A low-pressure system, or depression, is a region of relatively low atmospheric pressure that typically brings unsettled weather, stronger winds, and often fronts. Tracking the movement and deepening of lows is central to any passage weather briefing — most serious weather events at sea trace back to an under-anticipated low.
Sea state describes the general condition of the sea's surface — wave height, period, and pattern — often described using the World Meteorological Organization's own 0–9 scale alongside the Beaufort wind scale. Sea state and wind strength are related but not identical: a sheltered bay can have Force 6 wind and almost no sea state, while a narrow channel with wind against tide can build a nasty short sea state in far less wind.
A squall is a sudden, often short-lived increase in wind speed, typically associated with a line of dark cloud or an approaching shower or thunderstorm. Squalls can pack far more punch than the surrounding wind conditions, and spotting the tell-tale dark cloud line early — then reefing or dropping sail before it hits — is a core piece of seamanship judgement.
Swell is a series of long, rolling waves generated by wind or weather systems often far away, distinct from the shorter, choppier "wind waves" generated locally. Swell can arrive on a perfectly calm, windless day, having travelled hundreds of miles from a distant storm — a reminder that the sea's condition doesn't always match the local forecast.
True wind is the actual wind speed and direction as felt by a stationary observer, unaffected by the boat's own movement. Compare with Apparent Wind, which is what you actually feel while sailing.
Veering describes a wind shift that moves clockwise (for example, from south to west). It's the opposite of backing, and in many sailing areas a veering wind following a frontal passage is a classic, teachable sign that the weather is clearing.
A warm front is the leading edge of a warmer air mass replacing colder air, typically bringing a longer period of lighter rain and gradually rising cloud ahead of it, followed by a wind shift. Warm fronts tend to announce themselves further in advance than cold fronts, giving more time to plan around them.
White horses are the white, foamy wave crests that appear on open water once wind strength reaches roughly Force 4 on the Beaufort scale. They're a simple, reliable visual cue for estimating wind strength by eye when you don't have an instrument to hand.
Wind shadow is the area of reduced wind behind an obstruction — another boat's sails, a headland, or a building — where the true wind is blocked or disturbed. Sailing too close behind another boat can leave you sitting in dead air in its wind shadow, a lesson every dinghy racer learns (usually the hard way) early on.
A bend is a knot used to join two separate lines together. The sheet bend is the classic example — simple, reliable, and one of the first "joining" knots taught after the basic hitches.
A bight is any curved section or loop of line that doesn't cross over itself, as opposed to a "loop," which does. Knot instructions constantly reference "the bight," so it's worth knowing early — it just means the U-shaped bend partway along a rope.
The bitter end is the very end of a line, particularly the end that is secured or made fast (as opposed to the "working end" you're actively handling). On an anchor rode, running completely out of chain and reaching the bitter end — usually shackled to the hull — is a moment nobody wants to experience by surprise.
A bowline is a knot that forms a fixed, non-slipping loop at the end of a line, prized for being strong under load yet easy to untie afterwards. Often called the "king of knots," it's used everywhere from tying a line to a mooring cleat to rescue and safety applications — and it's one of the four knots (alongside the cleat hitch, clove hitch, and reef knot) that will genuinely get you through 90% of situations on a boat. Mnemonic: "the rabbit comes out of the hole, round the tree, and back down the hole."

Chafe is a slow, quiet line-killer — a properly rigged anchor snubber or a bit of chafe guard tubing at a fairlead can be the difference between a rope that lasts years and one that parts at 3am in a squall.
A cleat hitch is the standard method of securing a line to a horn cleat, using a figure-eight wrap finished with a locking hitch. It's designed to hold securely under load yet release instantly with one flick when needed — over-wrapping a cleat (a very common beginner habit) actually makes it harder, not easier, to cast off in a hurry.
A clove hitch is a simple, quick knot used to temporarily secure a line to a rail, piling, or another rope, formed from two identical loops. It's fast to tie and untie but can slip under uneven loading, so it's best treated as a temporary fastening rather than a permanent one.
Coiling is the technique of neatly gathering a line into loops for storage, to avoid tangles and keep the deck safe to move around on. A properly coiled and hung line isn't just tidy — it's ready to run free instantly when you need it, which a tangled heap on the deck is not.
Dock lines are the ropes used to secure a boat to a pier, pontoon, or dock, typically set up as bow, stern, and spring lines. Rigging dock lines correctly before you arrive — not scrambling for them as you approach — is one of the small habits that separates a calm docking from a chaotic one.
Dyneema is a brand name for ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene fibre, used in modern low-stretch sailing lines for its exceptional strength-to-weight ratio. It's largely replaced traditional wire for many rigging and running-rigging applications on newer boats, being lighter, stronger for its diameter, and far kinder to hands and gear.
A figure-eight knot is a simple stopper knot tied in the end of a line to stop it running out through a block or fairlead. It's one of the very first knots taught, precisely because it's quick, strong, and — unlike some stopper knots — doesn't jam when it's been under load.
A fid is a tapered spike, traditionally made of wood or metal, used to separate the strands of rope when splicing. It's a small, satisfying bit of traditional kit at the heart of rope splicing.

A hitch is a knot used to attach a line to another object — a rail, ring, post, or another rope — rather than to itself. Clove hitches and rolling hitches are both classic examples of attaching, as opposed to a bend (joining two ropes) or a loop knot like the bowline.
Line is the correct nautical term for rope once it's put to a specific job aboard a boat — sheets, halyards, and dock lines are all "lines," not "ropes." Old salts will (gently, or not so gently) correct you for calling it "rope" once it's rigged; on a raw coil in the chandlery, "rope" is still perfectly fine.
A mooring line is a line used to secure a boat to a mooring buoy or dock. See also Dock Lines and Mooring Buoy in Anchoring & Mooring.
A painter is the line attached to the bow of a dinghy, used for towing it or tying it up. Forgetting to properly cleat off the dinghy painter before heading to bed is a classic, entirely avoidable way to wake up one dinghy short in the morning.
A reef knot — called a "square knot" in American usage — is a simple, symmetrical knot used to tie two ends of the same line together, historically used to tie in a reef. It's not load-bearing or trustworthy for anything critical (it can slip or jam depending on how it's loaded), which is precisely why it's used for light jobs like tying in a sail reef point rather than anything safety-critical.
Rode is the general term for the anchor line, chain, or combination of both connecting the anchor to the boat. "Anchor rode" and "anchor line" are used interchangeably by most cruisers; a rode of all-chain gives better holding through weight alone, while a rope-and-chain combination trades some of that for lighter overall ground tackle.
A rolling hitch is a knot that grips a taut line or spar under load, tied so that it holds firmly along the direction of pull but can be slid when unloaded. It's the classic solution for taking the load off a jammed winch or a riding turn — genuinely useful, not just theoretical, knowledge.
A sheet bend is a knot used to join two lines of different thickness or material securely. It's essentially a bowline's simpler cousin, tied around a bight instead of a standing part.
A snubber is a short length of stretchy rope (often nylon) attached between the anchor chain and the boat to absorb shock loads and quiet down the chain's noise and jerking. Anchoring without a snubber on an all-chain rode is a rough, noisy, and needlessly hard-on-the-windlass way to spend a night — most experienced cruisers rig one automatically.
A splice is a permanent joint made by interweaving the strands of one or two ropes, creating a loop or joining two lines without a knot's inherent weakening. A spliced eye retains close to the rope's full strength, unlike a knot, which can reduce strength by a third or more — see Splicing the Perfect Eye for a full how-to.
A spring line is a dock line rigged at an angle (rather than straight across) to prevent a boat from surging forward or backward against a dock. A well-set spring line, combined with the engine gently in gear against it, is also a classic technique for holding a boat alongside — or even pivoting it — in a tight berth.
Whipping is binding the cut end of a rope with fine twine to stop it from fraying and unravelling. It's the traditional alternative (or companion) to melting the end of a synthetic line with a lighter — tidier, more durable, and considerably more old-school.
An anchor is a heavy metal device lowered to the seabed on a rode to hold a boat in place. Modern cruising boats mostly carry a plough, spade, or claw-style anchor as their primary "bower" anchor, chosen for reliable holding across a range of seabed types.
An anchor buoy — or trip line buoy — is a small float attached by a line to the crown of the anchor, marking its position and allowing it to be pulled free if it becomes fouled on the seabed. It also warns other boats not to anchor directly on top of your ground tackle, a courtesy that's more appreciated than it might sound.
Anchor watch is the practice of periodically checking a boat's position after anchoring to confirm the anchor is holding and the boat isn't dragging. Modern GPS anchor alarms have made this easier, but nothing replaces an experienced eye checking transits ashore, especially in a shifting wind or an unfamiliar, crowded anchorage.
Anchoring is the process of securing a boat to the seabed using an anchor and rode, one of the fundamental skills of cruising sailing. Choosing the right spot (holding ground, swinging room, shelter from forecast wind), letting out the correct scope, and setting the anchor properly under load are all part of doing it well — see Anchoring Practice for how hands-on this gets on a real course.

Choosing a good anchorage for the forecast — not just the prettiest bay — is judgement built through repetition, exactly the kind of thing week-long liveaboard courses are designed to bake in.
"Anchor aweigh" describes the exact moment the anchor breaks free of the seabed as it's being hauled up. It's the traditional call from the bow to let the helm know the boat is now unrestrained and drifting — a useful heads-up before applying any power.
An anchor roller is a fitting at the bow over which the anchor rode runs, guiding the anchor smoothly in and out of the water. A worn or poorly aligned roller can chew through a rode's outer sheath surprisingly fast, so it's worth an occasional check.
A bareboat charter is renting a sailboat without a professional crew, where you (holding an appropriate qualification) act as skipper and are responsible for all sailing, navigation, and safety decisions. It's the natural next step after certification — most sailors need an ASA 104 (or equivalent RYA/IYT qualification) before a charter company will hand over the keys. Dragging means an anchor has lost its grip on the seabed and is sliding, allowing the boat to drift rather than stay put. It's usually caused by insufficient scope, a wind shift onto a bad holding bottom, or simply too much wind for the ground tackle — and it's the single most common reason anchored boats have a bad night.
A fender board is a flat board suspended horizontally in front of fenders, used to spread protection along a rough or piled dock face. It's a small piece of kit that prevents fenders from squeezing into gaps between pilings and leaving the hull exposed.
Ground tackle is the collective term for a boat's anchor, rode, and associated fittings (shackles, swivels, snubbers) used for anchoring. "Solid ground tackle" is cruising shorthand for gear you can trust to hold through a genuinely bad night.
Holding ground describes the nature of the seabed at a given spot and how well it grips an anchor — mud and sand generally hold well, while weed and rock hold poorly. Charts and pilot guides often note the bottom composition of popular anchorages specifically because it matters this much.
A kedge anchor is a secondary, typically lighter anchor used for extra holding, to control a boat's swing, or to help refloat a grounded vessel by hauling against it. It's less commonly needed on a week-long charter than the primary bower anchor, but it's a classic piece of traditional seamanship kit.
A mooring ball, or mooring buoy, is a permanently anchored float that a boat ties directly to instead of dropping its own anchor. Popular cruising grounds like the BVI use extensive mooring fields to protect fragile seabeds (particularly coral and seagrass) from anchor damage — picking one up cleanly, under sail or power, is a core skill taught early in our courses .
"Picking up" a mooring means manoeuvring the boat alongside a mooring buoy and securing a line through its pennant or ring. It looks simple from the dock and is genuinely tricky the first few times — judging boat speed, wind, and current together while someone leans over the bow with a boat hook is a great early team exercise.

Scope is the ratio of anchor rode length paid out to the depth of water (plus freeboard) at the anchoring location. A common rule of thumb is 5:1 for chain rode in settled conditions and 7:1 or more in stronger wind or an all-rope rode — too little scope is the single most common cause of a dragging anchor.
Setting the anchor means applying gentle reverse power once it's on the bottom to dig the flukes into the seabed and confirm it's holding before trusting it for the night. Skipping this step and just dropping the hook and walking away is a rookie mistake that tends to reveal itself at the worst possible hour.
Swinging room is the area a boat will sweep through as wind and tide shift it around its anchor, and it must stay clear of other boats, rocks, and shallow water. Judging swinging room for every other boat already in the anchorage — not just your own — is basic anchorage etiquette as much as it is seamanship.
A windlass is a powered winch, usually electric or hydraulic, used to raise and lower a heavy anchor and chain. It saves a huge amount of manual effort compared to hauling chain by hand, but treating it with respect — hands clear, never as a mooring cleat — is a genuine safety rule, not a suggestion.
"Abandon ship" is the emergency order to leave a vessel that is no longer safe, typically moving to a liferaft as an absolute last resort. The seamanship maxim is blunt but important: only step up into a liferaft, never down — in other words, stay with the boat as long as it's floating.
A bilge pump removes water that has collected in the bilge, either automatically via a float switch or manually via a hand pump. Every boat should have at least one manual backup bilge pump, since electric pumps can fail exactly when you need them most — during a genuine ingress of water.
Crew overboard — traditionally "man overboard" and commonly abbreviated MOB — describes a crew member falling into the water, triggering an immediate, well-drilled recovery procedure. Shouting "crew overboard!", throwing a flotation device, assigning one person to keep constant visual contact with the person in the water, and manoeuvring back under control are all part of a drill every sailor practises repeatedly — because in a real emergency, muscle memory beats improvisation every time.
An EPIRB (Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon) is a distress beacon that, when activated, transmits the vessel's identity and GPS position via satellite to search-and-rescue authorities worldwide. It's the offshore sailor's genuine last line of defence when all other communication has failed, and modern models are compact enough to clip to a lifejacket.
A fire extinguisher is required safety equipment aboard for suppressing onboard fires, typically stowed near the galley and engine compartment. Knowing exactly where each extinguisher is and how it operates, before you ever need it, is standard first-day safety briefing content on every charter and course.
A first aid kit is a stocked container of medical supplies kept aboard for treating injuries and illness at sea. On a liveaboard course or charter, it's worth actually opening it and checking contents on day one — not discovering gaps in the middle of an emergency.
Flares are pyrotechnic distress signals used to attract attention and indicate a vessel's position in an emergency, particularly at night or in poor visibility. They come in different types (handheld, parachute rocket, smoke) for different ranges and situations, and — like fire extinguishers — carry expiry dates that are worth checking before departure, not after.
A safety harness is a body harness, typically integrated into an offshore lifejacket, with a tether that clips onto a jackstay or fixed point to prevent a crew member being lost overboard. "Clip on before you go forward" in rough conditions is one of those rules that sounds obvious until fatigue, darkness, or a false sense of calm tempts someone to skip it.
A jackstay, or jackline, is a strong line or webbing strip running along the deck from bow to stern, to which a crew member's safety harness tether is clipped. It lets crew move forward along the deck in rough conditions while remaining continuously attached to the boat, rather than only being safe at fixed points.
A kill cord is a lanyard connecting the helmsman to the engine's cut-off switch, which stops the engine immediately if the helmsman is thrown from their position. It's mandatory and non-negotiable on most powerboats and RIBs (dinghies included) precisely because a runaway boat circling back on a person in the water is a genuinely lethal scenario.
A lifejacket, or personal flotation device (PFD), is a wearable buoyancy aid designed to keep a person afloat and face-up in the water. Modern inflatable lifejackets are compact, comfortable, and increasingly the default choice for cruising sailors — but they only work if worn, which is why "when do we actually wear them" is one of the very first safety-briefing conversations on any course.
A liferaft is an inflatable emergency craft, stowed in a hard canister or valise, deployed as a last resort if a vessel must be abandoned. Offshore passages typically require a liferaft as mandatory safety equipment; coastal day-sailing generally doesn't, since help is assumed to be closer at hand.
Mayday is the internationally recognised radio distress call, used only when a vessel or person is in grave and imminent danger and requires immediate assistance. It's transmitted on VHF Channel 16 as "Mayday, Mayday, Mayday" followed by vessel identity, position, nature of distress, and number of people aboard — a structured format taught and drilled specifically so it holds up even under real panic (see Using a Handheld VHF).
Pan-pan is the internationally recognised urgency radio call, used for situations serious but not immediately life-threatening — such as a medical issue that isn't critical, or mechanical failure that isn't yet dangerous. It ranks below Mayday but above a routine call, and — like Mayday — is said three times to be unmistakable over a noisy radio channel.
A PLB is a compact personal version of an EPIRB, carried by an individual crew member rather than registered to a vessel, transmitting a GPS distress signal via satellite if activated. Increasingly popular for offshore racing and shorthanded sailors as a personal backup, worn on a harness or lifejacket.
A sea anchor is a large, parachute-like drogue deployed from the bow in heavy weather to slow a boat's drift and keep its bow pointed into the seas. It's a heavy-weather storm tactic most cruisers will never need to deploy in anger, but every offshore-oriented certification still covers the theory.
Securité — pronounced "SAY-CURE-EE-TAY," from the French — is the internationally recognised radio safety call used to announce navigational or weather information important to other vessels, such as a hazard, an approaching squall, or a vessel restricted in manoeuvrability. It ranks below Mayday and Pan-Pan in urgency but is still said three times for clarity.
VHF (Very High Frequency) radio is the primary short-range communication system used between vessels, marinas, and coastguard, with Channel 16 reserved worldwide for distress and calling. Every certified skipper is expected to know correct radio procedure and etiquette — including switching off Channel 16 for routine chat — covered in depth in Using a Handheld VHF.
COLREGs — the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea — are the internationally agreed rules governing vessel right-of-way, lights, shapes, and sound signals, adopted by the IMO. Every certified sailor is examined on COLREGs because they're not just theory — they're the shared, universal rulebook that keeps two closing vessels from having to guess what the other is about to do.
The give-way vessel is the boat required, under the collision regulations, to take early and substantial action to keep clear of another vessel. "Early and substantial" is the key phrase — a late, minor course change can be more confusing and dangerous to the other vessel than doing nothing at all.
A head-on situation exists when two power-driven vessels are approaching each other on reciprocal or nearly reciprocal courses, in which case both vessels alter course to starboard to pass port-to-port. It's one of the simplest COLREGs scenarios precisely because both vessels share the same, symmetrical obligation.
Rule 5 of the COLREGs requires every vessel to maintain a proper lookout by sight, hearing, and all available means at all times, appropriate to the prevailing circumstances. It sounds obvious, but "proper lookout" is a formal, examinable legal duty — and the majority of real collisions at sea trace back to it simply not being kept.
A vessel is on port tack when the wind is blowing over its port (left) side, with the boom typically out to starboard. Under Rule 12 of the COLREGs, a sailing vessel on port tack must give way to one on starboard tack — arguably the single most exam-tested rule for sailors specifically (COLREG Rule 12).
Read the full Port and Starboard guide →"Right of way" is common shorthand for which vessel has priority to hold its course under the collision regulations — though the COLREGs themselves more precisely describe a "stand-on" vessel's obligations, not an absolute right. Even the stand-on vessel must take avoiding action if a collision becomes otherwise unavoidable — right of way is never a licence to plough on regardless.
Sound signals are prescribed whistle or horn blasts used under the COLREGs to indicate a vessel's intentions or presence, particularly in poor visibility or close-quarters situations. One short blast means "I am altering course to starboard"; two short blasts mean "to port"; five or more short blasts is the universal "danger or doubt" signal that should never be ignored.
The stand-on vessel is the boat that, under the collision regulations, should generally maintain its course and speed while the other vessel gives way. "Should" is doing real work in that sentence — stand-on status is not an excuse to stop paying attention, since the give-way vessel doesn't always behave as expected.
A vessel is on starboard tack when the wind is blowing over its starboard (right) side, with the boom typically out to port. Under COLREGs Rule 12, a vessel on starboard tack has priority over one on port tack — a rule so fundamental that "starboard tack has right of way" is often the very first rule-of-the-road fact any new sailor learns.
Read the full Port and Starboard guide →A vessel not under command is one that, through some exceptional circumstance (such as mechanical failure), is unable to manoeuvre as required by the collision regulations and therefore has to be given a wide berth by all other vessels. It displays specific day shapes (two black balls) or lights to warn others of its restricted state.
A vessel restricted in its ability to manoeuvre is one that, by the nature of its work (dredging, towing, diving operations, and similar), cannot get out of the way of other traffic as freely as normal, and is afforded priority accordingly under COLREGs. Recognising the specific shapes and lights for this category is genuinely useful in busy commercial harbours.
When two sailing vessels are on the same tack, the windward vessel is the one positioned closer to the source of the wind, and under COLREGs Rule 12 she must give way to the leeward vessel. It's a distinct scenario from the more commonly quoted port/starboard tack rule, and one that catches out plenty of sailors who only remember the "starboard has right of way" half of the rule.

A berth has two common meanings aboard: a sleeping space (bunk or cabin) for a crew member, and a specific parking spot for a boat at a marina. Context nearly always makes clear which one is meant — "book your berth" (a spot on a course) versus "our berth's the third one along" (a marina slip).
A catamaran is a sailboat with two parallel hulls connected by a deck structure, offering greater stability, more interior space, and typically less heel than a monohull of similar length. Catamarans have become hugely popular for charter and family sailing because of the flat, spacious ride and shallow draft that opens up more anchorages — trade-offs include a different (some say less "sailing-like") feel and generally higher charter costs. Chartering is, for most people, the ultimate destination all this glossary-learning is building towards — the whole point of certification.
A crewed charter is a boat rental that comes with a professional skipper (and often additional crew), so guests don't need any sailing qualification themselves. It's a completely valid, relaxing way to experience sailing destinations, but it won't teach you to sail — that's what a course, not a crewed charter, is for.
Fast-track certification describes an intensive course format that compresses one or more full sailing certification standards into a single, immersive week rather than spreading them across many separate weekend sessions. It's the model behind every Sailing Virgins course — up to two ASA levels awarded per week, deliberately capped there so nothing crucial gets glossed over.
A flotilla is a group of privately skippered boats sailing the same route together, often with a lead boat providing route guidance, social events, and support. It's a popular way for newly qualified bareboat skippers to build confidence on their first independent charter, with a safety net close at hand.
The galley is a boat's kitchen — the area where food is prepared and cooked aboard. On a liveaboard course, galley duty (and clean-up) usually rotates through the whole crew, which is as much a lesson in teamwork as it is in cooking underway.
The International Proficiency Certificate is a widely recognised competency card, based on the ICC framework, that many European charter companies require before releasing a bareboat charter to a skipper. Completing ASA 104 or higher (or the RYA/IYT equivalent) typically qualifies a sailor to apply for one — worth knowing if a Mediterranean bareboat charter is on your bucket list.
International Yacht Training is a global sailing certification body offering a tiered progression from Competent Crew through Bareboat Skipper to Master of Yachts. Alongside ASA and RYA, it's one of the three certifying bodies most charter companies and marinas worldwide will recognise without a second glance.
Liveaboard describes living aboard a boat, whether for a week-long course, an extended cruise, or full-time. A liveaboard course format — where the crew eats, sleeps, and sails together on the same boat all week — accelerates learning enormously compared with day-sailing lessons, simply because there's far more time on and around the water.
A marina is a purpose-built harbour facility offering berths, fuel, water, and often other services for recreational boats. Compare with a mooring field or anchorage, both of which offer no shore-power or facilities but are usually free or cheap and closer to nature.
A monohull is a sailboat with a single hull, the traditional sailboat configuration. Monohulls generally point higher upwind and heel more than catamarans, giving many sailors what they'd call a more "connected," classic sailing feel — see our Monohull Courses.

An "overnight passage" specifically implies continuous sailing through the night, with watch-keeping shared among the crew.
Provisioning is buying and stocking all the food, drink, and consumable supplies needed for a charter or passage before departure. On a liveaboard week, provisioning is usually a shared crew task and a genuinely fun bonding exercise — deciding what seven days of on-board meals should actually look like.
The skipper is the person in command of a boat, responsible for the safety of the crew, the vessel, and all sailing and navigation decisions. On a Sailing Virgins course, the instructor is skipper for safety purposes throughout, while students take genuine turns at the helm and in decision-making roles as their competence builds.
A watch system is a rotating schedule that divides a crew into shifts responsible for sailing the boat, particularly used on overnight passages so everyone gets adequate rest. Common patterns include three or four hours on, off-watch for the same, repeated around the clock — a small piece of structure that makes multi-day passages sustainable rather than exhausting.
A yacht is, in everyday cruising usage, simply a recreational sailboat or powerboat used for pleasure rather than commercial purposes. It's a broader, less technical word than many sailors realise — no minimum size or luxury level is actually implied, whatever glossy magazine covers might suggest.

The committee boat is the vessel positioned at one end of the start (and often finish) line, from which race officials manage timing, signals, and the course. It's typically anchored or held on station for the duration of racing, acting as one fixed end of the invisible start line.
A downwind leg is a section of a race course sailed broadly with the wind from behind, typically from the windward mark back towards the leeward mark. It's where spinnakers usually come out and where overtaking opportunities (and mistakes) both multiply.
Handicap racing uses a rating system — such as PHRF or IRC — to adjust finishing times so that boats of different design and speed potential can compete fairly on the same course. It's what makes club racing between a mixed fleet of very different boats meaningful, rather than simply a foregone conclusion based on boat size.
Laylines are the two imaginary lines, projected from a mark, along which a boat can sail close-hauled directly to that mark without needing to tack again. Judging laylines accurately — not tacking too early and undershooting, or too late and overshooting — is one of racing's most decisive tactical skills.
The leeward mark is a turning point on a race course positioned downwind of the start, where boats typically round up from a downwind leg onto an upwind one. Leeward mark roundings are notoriously crowded and tactical, with multiple boats converging at once.
One-design racing uses boats built to an identical specification, so that racing results reflect crew skill rather than differences in boat design or budget. It's a popular, accessible format precisely because it removes the "who has the faster boat" variable from the equation.
A port-starboard situation in racing describes two boats approaching each other on opposite tacks, where — exactly as in COLREGs Rule 12 — the boat on port tack must keep clear of the boat on starboard tack. It's one of the most protested situations in dinghy and yacht racing alike, precisely because judging exactly when boats were "on" a given tack can be genuinely close.
A protest is a formal complaint lodged by one competitor against another for an alleged breach of the racing rules, resolved by a protest committee hearing after racing. Flying a protest flag and hailing "protest" immediately at the time of the incident is a required part of a valid protest under the Racing Rules of Sailing — you can't quietly bring it up hours later.

The starting line is an imaginary line, usually between the committee boat and a pin-end mark, that competitors must cross after the starting signal to begin racing. Timing a fast, on-the-line start without crossing early (triggering a recall) is one of racing's highest-value, most practised skills.
The windward mark is a turning point positioned upwind of the start, typically the first mark rounded after the beat. It's usually the most congested, high-tension point on the whole course, as the fleet compresses together after beating up from different angles.
"Ahoy" is a traditional nautical greeting or attention-getting call, most famously used to hail another vessel — as in "Boat ahoy!" It's fallen out of everyday use but remains part of sailing's shared cultural shorthand, along with a handful of other charmingly old-fashioned nautical phrases.
"All hands on deck" is a traditional call summoning the entire crew to help with an urgent task, now used generally (on boats and off) to mean everyone is needed at once. It's one of many sailing phrases — like "on the same tack" and "know the ropes" — that quietly sailed into everyday English.
"Davy Jones's Locker" is old maritime slang for the bottom of the sea, especially as the resting place of drowned sailors or lost cargo. Its exact origin is genuinely uncertain, but it's been common sailor's slang since at least the 18th century.
"Fair winds" is a traditional sailor's farewell wishing someone a safe, favourable voyage. Often extended to "fair winds and following seas" — the second half specifically wishing waves that push helpfully from behind rather than fighting the passage.
Grog is watered-down rum, historically issued as a daily ration to sailors in the Royal Navy, and by extension a general old-fashioned term for a strong drink aboard. The tradition (and the term) has long since faded from official naval life, but it lives on in sailing bars from Tortola to the Med.
A landlubber is a good-natured, slightly teasing term for someone unfamiliar with the sea or sailing. Every single sailor was a landlubber once — the only cure is time on the water, which is precisely what our courses are for.
A "loose cannon" originally referred to a ship's cannon that had broken free of its restraints and was rolling dangerously around the deck, and it now means an unpredictable, uncontrolled person or situation. It's a vivid, entirely literal bit of nautical history that's fully absorbed into modern English.
"Salty" describes someone with extensive, weathered sailing experience, and an "old salt" is an affectionately respectful term for a veteran sailor. Give it a season or two of real miles and you'll start earning the description yourself.
Scuttlebutt originally referred to a cask of drinking water kept on deck (the gathering point for informal crew chat), and it's now general slang for gossip or rumour. It's a lovely example of how much everyday English vocabulary quietly traces back to life on board ship.
"Shipshape" describes a boat (or anything else) kept neat, orderly, and properly stowed. "Shipshape and Bristol fashion" is the fuller, more old-fashioned version of the same idea, referencing the historically demanding standards expected of vessels loading at the port of Bristol.
A sundowner is a drink enjoyed at sunset, a beloved and near-universal ritual among cruising sailors at anchor. It's baked into the daily rhythm of a Sailing Virgins week for good reason — a cold drink, a debrief of the day, and a Caribbean or Mediterranean sunset is a genuinely hard combination to beat.
"Three sheets to the wind" describes someone very drunk, drawing on the image of sheets left completely uncontrolled, causing a sail (and by metaphorical extension, a person) to flap around with no steady direction. It's one of the best-known sailing idioms to have drifted entirely into everyday, non-nautical English.
ASA 101 is the American Sailing Association's foundational certification, covering basic sailing terminology, points of sail, sail trim, and safe skippering of a small keelboat in light to moderate winds. It's the true starting point for anyone with zero prior experience, and it's the certification our Beginner Course is built around, typically paired with ASA 103 in the same week.
ASA 103 builds on ASA 101, certifying a sailor to skipper a larger, engine-equipped cruising keelboat by day, including docking, basic coastal navigation, and anchoring. It's usually taken back-to-back with ASA 101 in a single week's Beginner Course, since the two standards build on each other so directly.
ASA 104 certifies a sailor to skipper a mid-sized cruising keelboat on a multi-day trip, covering provisioning, boat systems, advanced navigation, and emergency procedures — the certification most charter companies look for before releasing a bareboat. It's the heart of our Intermediate Course, and for most people it's the single certification that actually unlocks independent chartering.
ASA 106 certifies a sailor to skipper and navigate a larger cruising boat confidently in coastal and inland waters in any conditions, day or night, building on ASA 104 and 105. It's aimed at sailors who already have real bareboat miles under their belt and want to push into more demanding, all-conditions competence.
ASA 114 is the catamaran-specific endorsement, certifying a sailor in the particular handling, systems, and seamanship differences of multihulls, and it's taken alongside ASA 104. Anyone training on a catamaran with Sailing Virgins can add this endorsement to their Intermediate course, since monohull and catamaran handling genuinely diverge enough to need it.
Bareboat Skipper is IYT's certification permitting a sailor to charter and skipper a sailboat without professional crew, roughly equivalent in scope to ASA 104. It's one of three widely recognised routes (alongside ASA 104 and RYA Day Skipper/ICC) to the same practical destination: chartering on your own.
RYA Coastal Skipper is the qualification level above Day Skipper, certifying a sailor to skipper coastal and offshore passages by both day and night, requiring substantially more sea time and night hours than Day Skipper. It sits directly beneath Yachtmaster on the RYA's cruising ladder (RYA Training).
RYA Competent Crew is the entry-level practical qualification, teaching sea terms, basic sail handling, ropework, safety, and helmsmanship to someone with little or no prior experience. It's the RYA's rough equivalent to ASA 101 — the universal first rung on the ladder.
RYA Day Skipper certifies a sailor to skipper a small yacht on coastal passages in familiar waters by daylight, sitting above Competent Crew and requiring a minimum of five days, 100 nautical miles, and four night hours of prior sea time. It's arguably the most widely recognised "I can actually take charge of a boat" qualification among charter companies globally (RYA Course Finder).
The ICC is a UK-government-issued (and internationally recognised) competence certificate that many European countries require to charter or operate a leisure boat in their waters. RYA Day Skipper (or higher) practical qualifications typically satisfy the assessment requirements to obtain one.
Master of Yachts is IYT's most senior recreational/professional certification level, qualifying a captain to command larger yachts on extended, often commercial, voyages. It sits at the top of IYT's progression, well beyond what most recreational sailors will ever need, but it's the aspirational ceiling for anyone considering yachting as a career.
The Royal Yachting Association is the UK's national governing body for recreational boating, running a globally recognised qualification ladder from Competent Crew through to Yachtmaster Ocean. Its shorebased theory courses (Day Skipper Theory, Yachtmaster Offshore Theory) are widely studied even by sailors ultimately certifying through ASA or IYT, simply because the navigation and meteorology material is so thorough.
Yachtmaster is the RYA's senior, exam-based Certificate of Competence, awarded at Coastal, Offshore, and Ocean levels, each demanding progressively more sea miles, night hours, and command experience. Unlike other RYA qualifications, Yachtmaster isn't earned by completing a course — it's earned by passing a rigorous independent practical exam, which is exactly why it carries such weight in the sailing world (RYA Certificates of Competence).
Port is the left-hand side of a boat when facing forward, towards the bow. It's a fixed reference that never changes regardless of which way you're facing, unlike "left" and "right," which flip depending on your orientation — this is exactly why sailors use port and starboard instead.
A tack, as a manoeuvre, is turning the boat's bow through the wind so the sails switch sides, typically used to zig-zag upwind since a boat can't sail directly into the wind. As a noun, "a tack" also refers to which side the wind is hitting the boat (port tack or starboard tack), and to the forward lower corner of a sail.
Tacking turns the bow through the wind, while gybing (or jibing) turns the stern through the wind — they achieve a similar result (switching which side the sails are on) via opposite ends of the boat. Gybing is generally considered the trickier, higher-energy manoeuvre because the sail is powered up and moving fast through the turn, rather than luffing gently as it does during a tack.
A bareboat charter is renting a sailboat with no professional crew included, where a qualified sailor takes on the role of skipper for the trip. Charter companies typically require proof of certification — commonly ASA 104, RYA Day Skipper, or an International Certificate of Competence — before releasing the boat.
Most people can learn genuine foundational competence — helming, sail trim, tacking, gybing, basic navigation — in about a week of focused, hands-on instruction, which is exactly why Sailing Virgins built its courses around a single immersive week rather than scattered weekend lessons. A catamaran has two hulls and generally offers more stability, less heeling, and more interior space, while a monohull has one hull and typically points higher upwind with a more traditional "sailing" feel. Neither is objectively better — the right choice depends on whether you prioritise comfort and space or classic sailing performance.
A sailboat generates forward drive from the airflow over its sails, which stops working once the sails are pointed directly into the wind and start luffing (flapping) instead of holding an aerofoil shape. Most sailboats can sail no closer than about 45° to the true wind, which is why upwind progress always means tacking in a zig-zag rather than a straight line.
Windward means the direction the wind is coming from, and leeward — pronounced "loo-ard" — means the direction the wind is blowing towards. A "windward" object or vessel is upwind of you; a "leeward" one is downwind.
Heeling is the natural leaning of a sailboat to one side under wind pressure on the sails, a normal and expected part of sailing rather than a sign anything is wrong. A moderate, controlled heel is often a sign of good sail trim; excessive heel usually means it's time to ease the sheets or reef.
A knot is a unit of speed (one nautical mile per hour), while a nautical mile is a unit of distance (about 1.852 kilometres). Saying "20 knots per hour" is therefore redundant — the "per hour" is already built into the word "knot."
"Give way" means a vessel is obliged, under the international collision regulations (COLREGs), to take early, clear action to keep clear of another vessel with priority. It's paired with the "stand-on" vessel, which generally maintains its course and speed — though every vessel must still act if a collision otherwise becomes unavoidable.
Requirements vary hugely by country and by boat size, but chartering a sailboat almost anywhere in the world typically requires proof of competence — commonly ASA 104, RYA Day Skipper, an ICC, or an equivalent IYT qualification — even where no government "licence" as such exists. Sailing your own boat in many countries has no formal licensing requirement at all, though it's still strongly recommended.
The Beaufort scale is a 13-level scale (0 to 12) describing wind strength from calm to hurricane force, based on observable effects on the sea surface and on land rather than instrument readings alone. A Force 4 "moderate breeze" is comfortable, everyday cruising wind; by Force 8 "gale," most recreational sailors are headed for shelter.
A sheet controls a sail's angle to the wind by pulling it in or letting it out, while a halyard is used to hoist the sail up the mast in the first place. Put simply: halyards go up and down; sheets go in and out.
