The season ends. The good instructors keep sailing.
Delivery work dries up. Charter guests go home. Teaching is the one job on the water that gets better every year you do it — and the one that pays you to make other people fall in love with sailing.
Work that follows the sun
Caribbean November to May. Med in the summer. You already live this rhythm — now it comes with a schedule, a crew, and a reason to be there.
A skill nobody can take
Coaching eight strangers into a crew in seven days is a craft. Learn it once and you're employable on any coastline, for the rest of your life.
Real work, straight away
This isn't a certificate mill. You teach real students during the Academy itself — and the strongest graduates are invited onto the Sailing Virgins roster.
From working sailor to working instructor.
Three stages. You arrive a sailor; you leave with the SV teaching method in your hands and a season of work in front of you.
Remote prep
The SV teaching method and the psychology underneath it — self-determination theory included — plus course structure and safety framework, delivered online so the on-water week is spent on the water, not in a classroom.
7 days aboard, coaching daily
Live aboard and teach real students — not other candidates role-playing beginners — with a senior SV instructor on your boat coaching how you teach, every day. It culminates in your ASA 200-series instructor exams.
First deployment
The strongest graduates are invited onto the SV roster: shadow a senior instructor on a live course, then take your own crew through the Caribbean and Med seasons.
Your office has a boom vang.
SV instructors run week-long courses out of the BVI, St. Martin, Croatia, Greece, Thailand and French Polynesia. Between courses: the anchorage is yours.
The pay
Day rate plus tips, life aboard covered while you teach — and flights to base when you're not already in the region. Enough that the off-season becomes a choice, not a scramble.
The seasons
Caribbean runs November–May, the Med June–September. Take back-to-back weeks or spread them out — you set your availability each season.
The crews
Eight guests max, mostly 25–40, there to learn properly and have a week they'll talk about for years. No cattle-boat charters.
The ocean doesn't care about your resume. We care about two things.
Can you sail, and can you teach? Everything else is trainable.
You'll need
- Real miles as a skipper — or a strong mate with serious time on deck
- Comfort holding a crowd: briefings, debriefs, dinner-table energy
- Patience for the moment a student gets it wrong for the fifth time
- Availability for at least part of a season (Caribbean Nov–May or Med Jun–Sep)
Bonus points
- ASA, RYA or national sailing qualifications
- Ocean crossings and flotilla seasons — The Yacht Week or similar
- Dive, kite, foil or freediving skills for the off-hours
- A second language — our crews come from everywhere
- You tell a good story. It matters more than you think.
The bar for the SV team itself: two ocean crossings and two seasons with The Yacht Week or an equivalent flotilla operator. You don't need that to join the Academy — but the closer you are, the stronger your shot at the invitation.
