How long does it take to get ASA certified?
At Sailing Virgins, you earn ASA 101 + 102 in your first week (7 days). To reach bareboat charter certification (ASA 104), it takes 2 weeks total. The full progression from ASA 101 through 106 takes 3 weeks. Each course builds directly on the previous one, and we bundle pairs of certifications into single-week courses for maximum efficiency.
How much does ASA certification cost?
Sailing Virgins courses start at $3,790 for ASA 101 + 102 (Beginner). This is all-inclusive: instruction, certification exams, textbooks, 7 nights liveaboard accommodation, and all meals. The national average for equivalent certification (course fees only, no accommodation or meals) is approximately $4,200. The full ASA 101-106 progression costs approximately $12,070 with Sailing Virgins.
Can I skip ASA levels if I already have sailing experience?
Yes. If you hold RYA Day Skipper or equivalent certification, you may be able to start at ASA 103 + 104 (Intermediate). If you have extensive experience without formal certification, contact us for a placement assessment. Each case is evaluated individually based on your documented sea time and skills.
What is the difference between ASA and RYA certification?
Both are globally recognized. ASA is the American standard, most popular in the Americas and Caribbean. RYA is the British standard, dominant in Europe and Commonwealth countries. Both are accepted by charter companies worldwide. ASA uses a modular approach (101, 103, 104, etc.) while RYA uses an integrated progression (Competent Crew, Day Skipper, Yachtmaster). Do I need to be physically fit to take ASA courses?
You need to be able to move around a boat, pull lines, and swim. You do not need to be an athlete. Our students range from 18 to 75 years old. If you can climb a ladder and tread water for 10 minutes, you can take an ASA course. We accommodate a wide range of physical abilities.
What happens if I fail the ASA exam?
Our pass rate is over 98%. The exams combine written knowledge tests and practical on-water assessments. Because you are learning on the boat for a full week with a maximum 8:1 student-to-instructor ratio, most students are well-prepared by exam time. In the rare case someone needs additional practice, our instructors work with you to address specific areas.
