Have you ever dreamed of skippering a sleek catamaran through crystal-clear waters, with the wind at your back and the sun on your face?
Imagine this: you're at the helm of a 40-foot beauty in the British Virgin Islands, confidently maneuvering through turquoise bays and hidden coves.
Sounds like a dream, right? Well, it's time to make it your reality with our American Sailing Association ASA 114 sailing course!
Step aboard a modern cruising catamaran and master the art of catamaran sailing with our ASA 114 course. Over seven immersive days, you'll gain hands on experience handling twin engines, mastering tight maneuvers, anchoring with bridle systems, and navigating real world sailing scenarios, all while living on the water in destinations like the British Virgin Islands, Croatia, Tahiti, and Madeira.
This isn’t your typical classroom course. You’ll learn by doing, guided by elite instructors trained through our own Instructor Academy. Whether you’re dreaming of island hopping through the Caribbean or skippering across the Adriatic, ASA 114 prepares you for bareboat chartering with confidence.
ASA 114 builds on previous sailing experience and focuses on handling a cruising catamaran during a multi-day liveaboard trip. Catamarans offer stability, space, and comfort, but they are handled a bit differently than monohulls.
This includes both theory and hands-on training in key areas:
Use twin engines for tight turns, docking, and mooring with a bridle.
Learn how twin hulls, daggerboards, and weight distribution affect performance compared to monohulls.
Adjust sail plans, reef when needed, and control helm balance.
Secure the boat using multiple techniques, including a bridle system.
Manage fuel, water, electrical power, and battery charging.
Respond to crew overboard situations, engine failure, and heavy weather.
Read charts, plan routes, and understand how windage affects movement.
Sailing Virgins does not offer ASA 114 as a standalone course. Instead, it is part of our Intermediate Sailing Course, which combines ASA 103, 104, and ASA 114.
This program prepares you for bareboat chartering on both monohulls and catamarans, providing hands-on experience in a real-world setting.
ASA 104 certification for monohull bareboat cruising
ASA 114 certification for catamaran handling
Training in docking, anchoring, and sailing
Multi-day liveaboard experience in stunning sailing locations
By completing this course, you will be ready to charter monohulls and catamarans.
Some schools teach sailing like it’s a classroom lecture. That’s not how it works here. This is real sailing, real adventure, and real skills you’ll actually use.
The best way to learn is by doing, and the best places to do it are in destinations like the British Virgin Islands, Croatia, and Tahiti.
Sailing Virgins charters high-quality, well-equipped boats that are perfect for hands-on training.
Every Sailing Virgins instructor goes through the Sailing Virgins Instructor Academy before leading courses. You’re learning from professionals who know how to sail and how to teach.
Everything you need to learn. No hidden fees. No surprises.

Sailing Virgins is a great company that is well organized and has great values that match their clients. They keep a fun and positive attitude at all times and focus on the adventure and experience, not just the learning! Have been on trips with them twice and each time has been a blast!

James is one of the best leaders I have ever met. He has a kind and genuine way about him that earns your respect immediately, not because he asks for it, but because he deserves it. He puts the group first and the person he’s teaching a close second. He is especially good at teaching by letting you learn through doing. He doesn’t over-explain or hover. Instead, he gives you space to practice and steps in with the right feedback at the right time. It makes for a great learning experience and an even better trip. I would sail with him again in a heartbeat. Highly recommend.

@mattaO2034KTAfter many years of debating a Sailing Virgins trip, finally pulled the trigger and joined on a catamaran adventure in the British Virgin Islands. Should not have waited so long. Went solo but had no issue blending with a likeminded crew of genuinely good and friendly people. Coordination prior to the trip was handled smoothly by the SV team and communications were frequent and clear. The boat itself was fantastic - well equipped and in great condition. Captains Chris and Fin kept us safe, entertained, and taught along the way. They went above and beyond fulfilling our desires for adventure, beach hoping, finding great moorings, and overall being enjoyable blokes to be around. Particular highlight was a beach bonfire after an already long sail day - vibes were great the entire week. Only downside was the trip had to end. Won't be long until the next one.

Outstanding. Perfect combination between learning and fun. Finn, the instructor was excellent. He made sure that each one of us had a chance to practice not only sailing itself but also things like mooring and docking. I am particularly grateful that he made sure we tried as many times as necessary so that each one of us had done it right, which I am very grateful for. Definitely recommend!

A great week learning how to sail a monohull with instructor Finn in one of the most renowned sailing spots in the world. The mixture of adventure and instruction was perfect, and I came away from the week with more confidence on the water.

Outstanding sailing experience with Virgin Sails in BVI. I got my ASA 103, 104 and 114 under the tutelage of Capt James Finney. He was a great instructor. Patient and thorough. The only drawback was because so much learning happened in one week we were unable to go as deep in the course material and practice the maneuvers as regular ASA course. This was not fault of the instructor or sailing course. It was just because three certifications were covered in one week on a Catamaran. We also got to snorkel and swim. Loved it !!

I attended the BVI Sailing week and had a blast! I took several ASA courses and added onto my sailing skill set! Flying into and out of Tortola was extremely easy. Kathi gave me clear directions on where to meet and when. James is a incredible teacher and instructor and could cater to each students learning style!

Sailing Virgins! The best way to get into sailing or train to become a skipper. I had the best time with them in the BVI in November 2024. The concept is to bring sailing closer to younger people, which is quite different from what's mostly the case. SV offers an effective methodology to train their students, either from the ground up or to hone their skills. The training is practice-oriented and aims to encourage people to become self-sufficient, either as crew members or as skippers. More importantly, SV puts the emphasis on a positive experience. Sailing is an adventure and is fun; it's about collaboration as a crew and having a great time together.

Great group of people and made new friends. A great experience that improves your life back home. Helpful to get excited about sailing and peaceful as well.
ㆍWhere do I sleep?
You'll stay on the boat. Training yachts usually have four double cabins, with some also featuring one or two single skipper cabins.
ㆍDo I need prior experience?
Yes. To take ASA 114, you’ll need ASA 101, 103, and 104. If you already have some sailing experience or ASA 101, you can complete ASA 103, 104, and 114 all in one week with us.
ㆍCan I bring my own gear?
You can, but everything is provided. Just pack light, bring shorts, t-shirts, swimwear, a hat, sunglasses, and a rain jacket.ㆍ
ㆍIs there cell service?
Pretty much everywhere.
ㆍCan I bring a guest who isn't taking the course?
Yes! Non-sailing guests can come along at a discounted rate. They’ll get to relax on board, take in the scenery, and enjoy the destinations, but they won’t take part in the training or receive certifications.
